Fire Pit & Fireplace

Why this cabin is so special. The original 1960’s open fireplace is perfect for summer or winter nights. The fireplace is mostly for ambiance so please follow our instructions to safely build your indoor and outdoor fires.

FIREPLACE (living room): Duraflame logs only (small fires inside please)

OPEN THE DAMPER before you start a fire. The damper is a pull chain on the left side of the fireplace opening. It must be open before you start the fire or you will fill the room with smoke. Unhook the chain and let it release (go limp). You will hear the damper open.

REMOVE ASH before you start a new fire. Use the small shovel next to the fireplace and scoop out as much ash as you can into the bucket. Make sure the ash is not hot. If there are hot ashes in the fireplace leave them there.

ENJOY: This wood burning fireplace with the beautiful open hearth is the reason we fell in love with this cabin. Its sole purpose is ambiance. It does very little to heat the house so please keep the fire small. It’s safe to use but it’s from the 60’s, so take it easy on her please ;)

SAFETY: Use the fireplace screen at all times. When you head to bed make sure the screen is up. Coals will still be hot - just leave them to cool overnight (keep damper open when coals are still hot).

ASH: If the ash is cool before you leave you can put it in a trash bag and take to the Arrowhead Lake Trash center on your way out. If they are still warm you can scoop them into the bucket and empty them into one of the metal ash bins outside.

CLOSE DAMPER: If the fire is not in use and there is no smoke from hot coals you can close the damper to keep warm air from escaping up the chimney. Pull the chain on the left of the fireplace tight and hook it place.

FIRE PIT (outdoor):

There is a 10pm curfew for noise in the backyard. This doesn’t mean you have to pack up at 10pm, but if you are too loud for the neighbors past 10pm they can call security and they might come by to have you retire for the evening.

Feel free to use the blue cooler in the basement to pack drinks and ice down to the fire pit.

Safety Tips:

  • If it’s too windy, please do not light the fire pit.

  • If there are ashes in the pit, check to see if they’re still hot before you shovel them into the metal can (same metal can used for BBQ). If they are hot, just leave them be.

  • Don’t use lighter fluid, gasoline or any flammable fluids to light the fire pit.

  • Never leave the fire pit unattended.

  • Limit the amount of wood you put in the fire — only put what's necessary to keep it burning. This is not a bonfire.

  • Don’t burn twigs and branches from the woods like pine or cedar. These can “pop” and throw sparks.

Extinguishing your fire pit:

  • Let flames burn out.

  • Pour a bucket of water over coals if it’s still burning (bucket and sink inside basement)

  • Leave ashes in pit to cool.

  • You can remove excess ash into the metal bins outside. Please do not dispose of ash into the forest.
